Teeth

Has anyone experienced problems with your teeth since your diagnosis?? I have never had a cavity until my diagnosis four years ago and now even the teeth that have been repaired are breaking? I can't find anything on this and was wondering if anyone else had this problem.

I've heard from many people with PsA that they have problems with their teeth breaking. I do, too. Mostly my molars. I also never had cavities until my PsA got bad.

Now THAT's not what I want to hear! I was diagnosed 5 years ago, and have never had a cavity. I really really hope that there is not a specific connection.

Me too! Although I hate to add that quite a few of my molars have broken over the last 7 years, which is about the time my joint pain really started to kick in, I reasoned it was because I was getting older and maybe human teeth don’t cope much past 40 as we now live much longer than we did centuries ago. So could there be a connection to PsA or perhaps medications?

My teeth are fine. I have never broken any and no cavities since 6th grade!

I've had to have crowns and root canals on all my molars. First I got cavities in the back, then the nerves got inflamed from them working on the tooth. Leading to root canals. Really frustrating.

One consideration: some of our meds can cause drier mouth than normal. So we don't have the protection of the correct amount of saliva. My dentist said that leads to a lot of problems too. There is a mild oral rinse called Biotene that I use every night to help protect my teeth on the recommendation of my dentist. It can be found at any drugstore.

I have the same prob. All of my back teeth r breaking apart. Starting from the gumline. Dentist said its a good possibilty the arthritis has something to do with it.

Me too! I am in my mid sixties and my age may be part of the reason. Same thing with pieces of teeth breaking off especially around a tooth with a filling but not always.

There seems to be too many of us for this to be coincidental!

Oh wow, scary. I have never in my life had a real cavity (once I had a pinpoint "concerning area" but that was it). Just reading this makes me cringe and want to go brush my teeth again.

Since my PsA diagnosis my teeth & gums have been a mess. I have had 3 ceramic inlays (rather than crowns), 4 teeth have cracked and i have had 2 extractions! My dentist has put me on 3-monthly check ups just to keep on top of it so its not like i don't go regularly enough!

I always used to have those horrible crumbly teeth dreams.....it almost as if it were a premonition!

the year prior to all hell breaking loose with PsA I spent what seemed like weeks at the dentist office. cavities , abcesses you name it. Now on humira and all is fine.

I would think its medication causeing your teeth to go bad..

Thanks for the replies. It looks as if there is a problem whether it is medication or the disease itself. I appreciate the input guys.

with a root canal do you need to go off your biologics?

I would talk to your reumatologist and the dentist about this… But probably yeah.

I think there is also a more general issue with tooth pain that has been discussed elsewhere on the forum, although I can’t remember where. While not actively damaging teeth due to PsA some of us often have a general tooth ache, normally covering a number of teeth at once. For me, it’s a dull “I know it’s there” type ache but not horrific.
