Something new! Collar bone pain

Having become incredibly bored with knee and foot pain, I thought I would venture out like @Poo_therapy and @Jen75 and try something new!
Out of no where, I have ridiculous clavicle pain. It’s the worst at my neck where it joins. It’s so tender I can hardly touch it and even bending my head hurts. following towards the shoulder, there is no pain along the bone and then a very tender spot where the clavicle meets the shoulder joint. I haven’t done anything strenuous to bring it on but it sure is limiting movement. It even is causing tension up the back side of my head on that side. Because it it close to the surface at my sternum, Voltarin extra strength helps a bit. I have had a bit of a whole body flare affecting my lower back and hips too. Anyone else have to deal with this particular issue?

I’ve had problems with my ac joint, and it did cause tenderness along the clavicle. It has occasionally reappeared when I’m having a flare. The right side i had surgery on to create more space bc the bones were grinding, ouch.

I had a cortisone shot in the left side last spring when I was in between biologics.

It just stinks, especially because shoulder pain can make finding comfortable sleep positions pretty challenging.

No one has ever been able to touch my collar bones, I think I was born with sensitive ones. And yes @Amos they have flared too with PsA. Indeed for ages one looked bigger than the other, it doesn’t anymore now that you’ve mentioned them.

Poor you this, rib pain and sternum pain can be in my view the worst that PsA throws at us. And furthermore I consider the definition currently used for costochrondritis to be too limiting for what our disease can cause in the entire rib cage set of joints and ligament and tendons. It is for me the worst pain and can make me just sob in misery.

It’s concerning you’re havin such a flare here and elsewhere too. What does rheumy think?

I haven’t spoken to the rheumy as we are still in very restricted access to specialists due to Covid. Their time is being redirected (I guess). But I will see if an email might get through to him. The flares that I get lately come in bursts and then settle to where I’m not squirming with pain. They sort of come on hard and fast and then when they are done, I have residual tenderness that remains. When I get pain like that in a new area, I try to figure out what I did… like a self induced injury or watched the birds too intensely but some of the most painful issues come from doing nothing more strenuous than blinking. At the moment, it seems to be on the way out, I can turn my head reasonably well but the sternum/collar bone area is still tender. It’s all weird enough for those around me to think that I am really “special”! How nice!:tada:

I have been suffering from bouts of this for many years. When it gets so bad that I could cry in pain, my primary care doctor sends me for a cortisone injection whilst under Xray so that they could get the needle into the right spot. I have also had cortisone injections into my hips. This worked for me and lasted for many months. Other times I put up with the pain and treat it best I can. I rub in menthol type rubs, Voltaran gel and take Paracetamol to take the edge off the pain. Lately I have resorted to CBD oil for pain and to help me sleep. I also alternate an Ice pack and a heat pack. It is no fun spending your days and nights treating pain. Sometimes I can relate to what I have done and other times I have no idea.

Thanks @bella, this was very new to me and a bit discouraging as we tend to prefer the “familiar” issues…it came on so fast and felt like I had been kicked by a mule. I have some potent cbd rub but find it is about as effective as butter.

Hi Amos,
Medicinal c…b…d oil is still not legal in Australia. I swallow 3 or 4 drops at bedtime of the highest quality in the world. Hopefully this amount is not enough to arrest me. I look at it this way, I am 74 with no criminal record. What will a court do if I do get charged - not much I reckon. It helps me sleep. It eases the pain, especially in my hips at night as I am a side sleeper. Otherwise I toss and turn which is difficult for me to do when in pain, then I finish up having to get out of bed and try sleeping in my recliner chair.

I’m a little late to the conversation but, Amos, I am SO sorry you keep finding new adventures in Painville. Ya just gotta stop over doing strenuous stuff like blinking and breathing. :woman_facepalming:

Yes, I have intermittent clavicle pain near the shoulder. Always on one side and right where straps go. (I’d go for the ‘60s liberated look but I’ll spare everyone’s retinas and refrain. Trust me, it’s way less than pretty) I’ve never figured out what triggers it for me either (if anything) and it can be really really miserable. Nothing helps much except going liberated when I’m not in public. When it gets to the point that slamming my hand in a car door would feel good I take some prescription stuff which takes the worst edge off.

I just wish research and doctors were as persistent, creative and tenacious in figuring out how the heck to kick this thing as the PsA is about wrecking our lives. Heck! I’d settle for for just making life a tad comfortable. But I tend to be unreasonably demanding like that.

Amos- how is your shoulder feeling now? Has it relaxed it’s hold on you a little bit?

Thanks for asking! Both ends of the collar bone joints have almost returned to normal leaving residual tenderness. Sometimes I handle new flares by inducing a greater pain as a distraction like stubbing my toe on the bed post or contemplating the increased cost of living. “Distraction, the all natural pain relief.”

I hear you completely. I usually wind up having surgery and that completely obliterates a flare. Actually, I had surgery on the base of my right thumb eight years ago. The left thumb was giving me a lot of grief as well. Lo and behold, after the surgery on the right side, left side stopped giving me problems even though it is still a mess. Huh?

I know right? I got remission from my carpal tunnel symptoms in my right wrist by having an injection in my left…. Then when they came back, remission in both because I had a bit of my bowel cut out!

You don’t even want to know what I’ve got planned for them now they are back again :joy::joy::joy:

How does that even work? Actually you know what? I had surgery on my right AC joint and my left one stop bothering me at that point. And last year when my bio logic failed I was having pain with both of them so I had an injection in the left and both of them cleared up. Why the heck should it work like that?

It is very strange isn’t it? Next time one of you has surgery l’ll let you know if I go into remission! Group therapy at its best! @seenie is probably cured by all our sacrificial misery.

Amos, you know the whistle that always brings me limping back. I’m so sorry about your clavicle … it’s just one thing after another, isn’t it? And I cannot claim to ever have had a clavicle issue. Thank goodness for that.

I am not cured, no. I’m still draggin’ myself around with aches and pains, but the good news is that I started the loading doses of Cosentyx yesterday. No problems, but no miracles yet either.

Hope to be back more often, very soon.
