To take better care of my system, I take a bunch of vitamins every day, but, my bottle collection is taking a whole shelf in my kitchen cabinet. Am I going loco or what ? :D This is what I take daily :
2000 mg of Vitamin C (to boost the depressed immune system because of the MTX or biologics)
600 mg of Calcium with vitamin D (to compensate the loss of calcium because of menopause)
2500 mcg of Vitamin B12 (because B12 rocks, kids)
10,000 mcg of Biotin (to help my psoriatic paper nails :( )
800 mcg of Folic Acid (I used while taking MTX and I still do, another awesome little critter )
2400 mg of Fish OIl (1200 mg Omega-3) (to help my joints and lower my cholesterol)
OVer the counter CVS probiotic 20 billion (L.rhamnosus, L. acidophilus, B. breve, B. Longum)
I don't know if it is too much or not. I take a multi vit, D3 during the winter and Folic acid 2mg a day and make sure I eat a Vitamin C source daily. I use to take a pregnancy multi vit for additional B vitamins but now I take just a multi vit. I eat really well; we grow our own vegetables and some of our meat and all of our eggs. I had read an article a while ago about the urine in America had more vitamins in it than most third countries had in their food supply. I do not know if this is accurate at all but the gist of the article was how much we spend on vitamins that just gets excreted by our bodies because we can't store so much of it but to have daily amounts for our bodies to use. I also do not want to rev up my immune system; PsA is an over active immune system attacking our joints, tendons, ligaments and sometimes other organs. I do not want to fuel that in any way. I want my immune system to calm down. I take mtx and Remicade to suppress my immune system but it is still more over active than most. That is my thoughts on it but if it seems to suit your body I say go for it. Just do not overdue the fat soluable vitamins such as A or E. They quickly become damaging as your body can't exctret it.
Agreed. Lots of vitamins for me, too. I started taking a powder mixed with water (either tropical orange or lemon flavors). My MD offered it as an alternative to the MANY bottles I was using. I take D3, zinc and fish oil pills with the vitamin "drink". It helped reduce nausea to take the drink instead of all the pills. Once I had taken all the pills I barely had room for breakfast!
Hahahha Janeatiu, I hear you! :D I spend more time swallowing pills (not a good pill person) than eating my cereal :D Then, at work I have a glass of water with Green Superfood.I may be duplicating something, I need to look into it carefully. I guess that the road to hell is paved with good intentions :D Thanks y'all for your replies !
Just this last week, I have also been wondering if I am taking too many vitamins. I take Vitamin C, fish oil, glucosamine with MSM, a daily vitamin, and D3. I started the D3 and Vitamin C last November because I was constantly sick with a cold and now I have not been sick once since adding them to my day. I am not sure if it's coincidence or if the D3 and C have kept me from getting sick. I say, keep on doing what you are doing if it works for you!
If I even think about taking a vitamin my psoriasis an PsA well start a flare up of both . I can remember before I was even diagnosed with the psoriasis, didn't have the arthritis yet, I started drinking this shake for lunch at work they were loaded with vitamins. I can't remember the name of this shakebut it was one the very first health shake that came out in the late 90's, but anyway after about the thrid one I got that morning and i was so shocked because I had about a hundred of the pus things all over each hand and about the same on the bottom of each foot.I know it was that shake that was loaded with vitamins. Stoped drinking them and my psoriasis cleared up. My psoriasis started when I was aound12years old, just was that bad. When it started my mother took me to about six different specialist and not one had any idea what it was.At that time Tupelo had two dermatologist and they were in the same place so if wanted a second opinion you had to go to Memphis which was two hours away and her insurance at time would not have paid for any of it, out of network. So since it was not that bad when I was younger and didn't come up that offend, I just dealt with it.
Now it's worse because I know by my family doctor and him doing blood work that my vitamin D is low so low he wrote me prescription strength 2000 I.u's.I was broke out four days later so bad it even made my PaS flare up to the point he had to give me some prednisone to get it all cleared up. That's why I so surprised when I read but some of you can taking vitamins and them not bothering you.l must have a sensitive ammune system, that is really what the doctor said.
I didn't take vitamins for many years. But about 5 years ago my fatigue got worse, I was losing a lot more hair, and I felt like I was moving through molasses all the time. Bloodwork (over 6 months) showed chronic borderline anemia, so I needed to add the iron and B vitamins. I was also deficient in D, so added that.
On the other hand, my P flares up with Vitamin C supplements. I have plaque P.
I'm so sorry Jennifer that you have this happen! That must be really tough :(

That's interesting. They don't seem to be hurting me, in my case I have not identified a cause-effect so far. Ask me tomorrow, it may change as we speak, you never know.
I’m pretty sure that Americans take way to many vitamins and supplements. We have really expensive urine as there really is only so much our bodies will use and the rest will be excreted or build up in toxic levels in body fat. I’m speaking of “Mega-dosing” here.
I think about it like this: don’t run out and buy every vitamin or supplement that is recommended for PsA or arthritis on the interwebs. Talk to your doc and pharmacist first. They’ll probably recommend Vitamin D3; Calcium, and folic acid (if you take MTX). I take all of these, and they were prescribed. The other things are ones that I added one at a time. I make sure it works and that I don’t notice any adverse effects. I take melatonin as needed for sleep. Resveritrol and Soy isoflavones for menopause symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats), and B12 keeps me from feeling like I’ve been hit by a truck! I have tried many others, but these work for me. I also don’t take more than the recommended dosages. Oh, and I take acidophilus if I have to take antibiotics, but I get my doc to write and rx for that too.
I would be cautious about taking something that revs up the immune system. Ours are already revved enough! Ours need naps!
I think the key is to use these if you feel you need but it's always better to get vitamins from the food that you eat. I had tried to incorporate many of these into my meals and snacks. It's become quite easy to do since I have to eat or snack before any dose of my meds. It is possible to over do it on some vitamins. I did my own research and made the decisions based on how I had been feeling.
