Last night I passed a kidney stone. That’s the second one this year. Is there any connection to PsA? I didn’t go to emergency. The last time I went, I spent 8 hrs waiting to be seen. They gave me Flowmax, which I take everyday. PsA is destroying my hips, so Flowmax helps a great deal!
There is a connection with inflammatory bowel disease common with PsA but the most common cause is a side effect of MTX. People for reasons I do not understand including even those who have had a kidney stone do not believe they need to drink in excess of 1 oz of water per pound of body weight, or all manner of problems will occur especially if they take folic acid to mitigate some of the side effects of MTX. Folic acid is water soluble.
My July 4th didn’t start out so great, but luckily it got better once the stone passed! I had a kidney stone several years ago, and not too many years ago my nephrologist told me I had 11 small stones in my left kidney (the first stone I passed was in my right kidney)……a year after he had seen the 11 stones, he told me they were gone–I asked if they could dissolve, and he didn’t think so. He thought maybe I passed them with minimal discomfort.
Anyway, thankfully yesterday’s wasn’t as painful as the first one. I had pinkish then brownish urine, which, of course, is a sign of bleeding, and I didn’t have the sort of pain associated with a bladder infection. I started collecting my urine, hoping to catch the stone if there was one, and I did!!!
I noticed this discussion and would like to know if kidney stones are connected with PsA. I tend to think mine are caused by the calcium pills I take. If I knew that for sure, I’d stop taking them, even though my internist has prescribed them for my osteopenia.
