So just sat down to read the paper (Daily Express - UK newspaper) and there is a small article saying researchers in the US Cancer Research Centre discovered a link between taking the above named (OTC) suppliment for arthritic type joint problems and being less likely to have died from respiratory disease, cancer, and heart disease. Apparently the original study was published in the European Journal of Epidemiology.
So what do you think? Does anyone on here take the suppliment?
I did a bit of research on it a few months back. There are VERY mixed reviews on glucosamine for arthritis and inflammation, so I opted not to use it. While the research doesn't support it, there are individuals who seem to benefit from it. I don't know about other benefits. Could you post the link for that?
Yep I will go online later and see if I can find it Stoney I remember asking my then GP about glucosamine years ago and he said it was a “Quack remedy” and not to waste my money…but he also told me I was too fat to have a baby ( I was 10 stone…think that’s about 140 pounds) and that’s why I hadn’t fallen pregnant even though I has been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and had to fetility treatment for my first child. Lol
Interesting. I’d read the mixed reviews, tried it, and found that it made no difference to me. So for me, a waste of money. Maybe a rethink on this, although at this point, the possible positive effects of the glucosamine are pretty minor concerns for me! LOL
Think you have enough on your plate to worry about this at the moment Seenie, bless you.
It was more the other health effects the article reports I find interesting and will look into the research as they claim 8 years after the initial study those in the group who had used the suppliment were "41% less likely to have died of respiratory disease, cancer deaths were cut by 13%. Women were the most likely to benefit with an overall 25% reduction in mortality amound the suppliment users - due to a 29% reduction in heart disease deaths."
But this is a newspaper article I stress, and we all know its tracking down the research and reading without bias that can make all the difference! (Not that I’m cynical you understand )
So I maybe the same idea of cutting down on body wide inflammation that’s the health benefit…as I say I will try to put the link up but, like now, I usually use my phone to access this site and have an old and cranky laptop that has an attitude problem lol so I can’t always do what I need to do with it.
Classic! I have PCOS, but since my second child, everything has really smoothed itself out, with no weight loss or anything. Not that I want to have more kids (I'm 41 already), but I could easily now. And I had to use fertility treatments for both of my kids.

Glucosomine is supposed to help add lubrication to the joints... in my case I have enough fluid there already! I tried it anyway, and my joints got even MORE puffy. Ugh. Not helpful.
I was taking Glucosamine, but have since stopped because it did not seem to help me. I dont want to have to pay out money for things that don't work for me. I took it for 3 years. I do take fish oil capsules.
I have a good friend who is a Nutrionalist and takes Glucosamine with Condrotrin and been on it for at least 6 years for Osteo A and has recently been diagnosed with Breast Cancer and is undergoing treatment. It obviously doesn't prevent cancer in everyone.
I read about glucosamine years ago, before I knew the flarey, annoying thing was PsA. I did try it but didn’t notice anything much happen. Saying that, as I’ve said before I would lick frogs if it would make the PsA go away. May be worth taking glucosamine on top of my 10 mtx tablets, my leflunomide, my prednisone, my fish oil tablets and my humble multi vitamin.
My doctore to use good ole Knox gelatin instead of the supplements. This can be mixed with various juices to make jello ot can be drank. Ill let you know if it works.
Glucosamine is NOT something ANYONE with PsA should take not EVER.
While the jury is out as to whether the data indicating a connection strong connection between glucosamine and various liver problems including acute cholestatic hepatitis is a direct cause, prescribing iformation in the UK strongly doscourages it. Inn the US, mayo clinic says no (but they generally don't like supplements finding most of them either do nothing or cause harm) In UK the official word is they won't eve know for sure:
At present, it is unlikely that further research will resolve the uncertainty since if
hepatitis is caused by glucosamine then it appears to occur by an idiosyncratic
mechanism. Thus any human study would need to be extremely large to demonstrate
the hazard due to the rarity of the outcome and the many potential confounding factors
such as the use of other medication.
Their studies found little effect at 3 weeks higher effect at 3 months and more effect at 6 mos. I guess my point is why tempt fate???
The thing is the LIVER pretty quickly deals with it (glucosamine is naturally produced in the body) and gets rid of the excess unless of course its busy dealing with MTX or any number of NSAIDS.
The diabetes association has found a direct link with Glucosamine and elevated blood sugar. IF you are allergic or sensitized to shell fish you can expect an increase in inflammation as Glucosimine is essentially shrimp peelings.
Gelatin is a GOOD idea as it contains chondritin which does help (especially with heel pain there was thread about it a while back: http://discussion.livingwithpsoriaticarthritis.org/forum/topics/has-anyone-found-heel-pain-relief?commentId=6339595%3AComment%3A41286
Oh TNT you are so vague. Say what you mean. Go on
Anyway, I’ll take the hint and perhaps not take it.
I have found a great temporary cure I’m pleased to say - the stress of have 6 hyper four year old girls having a craft and glitter birthday party AT HOME took my mind off my sore knee/ankle/Achilles tendon pain.
I'll bet it would..........
Agree

Lol Gwynneth! You beat me to it!..was gonna ask lamb why he beats about the bush
Lamb thanks for your input…I like to know what people think about different suppliments and such, and think its important to discuss these sort of things on here.
I must admit I don’t take any suppliments unless I’ve got the go ahead by my docs, although all I take at the moment is salmon oil (advised by the cardiac dietition) and the very odd glass of red
Perhaps aother new post on supplements! Fish oil is the only one that my Rhuemy recommended. I eat plenty of fruit and veg and I hope that is good enough.
two rhuematologists, surgeon and several doctors all said the same thing. Waste of money. Glucosamine
just some more of that tofu logic :)
I started taking iron because though I wasn't anemic I was at the "low" end of normal. I was having a lot of anemia symptoms (mild hair loss, intense fatigue) that were mainly attributed to my PsA but taking the iron supplement helps me A LOT. My vitamin D is also low. But I live in the pacific nw of the US and many many people here have low Vit. D. I also take B6 and B12 but since those are water soluble I'm probably just peeing out the money I spent on them ;P
