Anyone prescribed a PPI along with your NSAID?

I’ve been taking NSAIDS for about 20 years and have not had any GI bleeds or ulcers, but keep reading about long term use of NSAIDs and the possible need of an acid reducing agent or proton pump inhibitor. Taking PPI’s have risks of their own, but I can’t help wonder about prophylactic measures. Anyone else had this discussion with their doc/Rheumy?

When I was initially put on NSAIDs, I was also told to take prilosec (or generic) every day. The rule of thumb is that if I'm taking daily NSAIDs, then I am also taking prilosec. This is a non-negotiable from my rheumy's point of view.

The NSAID I take has it combined. I’m pretty sure that is the only reason I have tolerated it so long.

My doc’s rule is the same as Stoney’s. NSAIDs and PPIs go together.

I started taking Nexium 10 years ago because suddenly my stomach couldn't deal after being on NSAID's for 20 years. I started having what felt like chest pain (heart attack-like). No one could figure out what it was, as it was NOT like heartburn AT ALL. Finally a nurse practitioner said let's try a PPI on the off chance it could help. Well, within days, completely cured the problem that had stumped an ER doc, a cardiology, and my general practitioner for months.
