Strange Symptom

I've been having strange pains in my nails, both fingers and toes. It feels like when you hit your nail with a hammer, but not as severe as that, but the same sort of pain under my nails. It moves around. Sometimes it's a toe or a couple of toes, then couple of fingernails. Sometimes on the same hand, sometimes on opposite hands/feet. It doesn't last very long. I pinch the ends of my fingers and toes to ease the pain. I wouldn't worry about it, but lately I've noticed I don't have a lot of feeling on the very end of my fingers and toes. Since I lost the feeling in my heel after suffering with tendentious I am a little worried it will happen elsewhere. Anyone else have this??

It sounds like neuropathy. Definitely talk to your doctor about it. There are many different reasons for this, and some of them are ones that you might be able to do something about.

Sounds like neuropathy. I have it pretty bad and see a Neurologist for it. It is weird that your nerves would feel numb but hurt at the same time. I put off taking drugs for as long as I could but finally had no choice as it felt like someone was slashing a knife across the top of my foot at times. I am taking Lyrica now but had tried Gabapentin with no success.

Hi justjo, I have been having the same strange pain in the nail on my big toe! It comes and goes, so far only in one toe. The large joint below this has thickened somewhat and I don't have a lot of feeling around it, right up to the top of the toe. It is rather weird.....but when the pain occurs it is really painful. I have mentioned this to my Rheumatologist and she says it is probably Bursitis! I hope you get some answers soon, take care.

Regards Loz

This was one of the first symptoms I had and waxes and wanes from bearable to unable to walk or use my hands depending on how well my inflammation is under control. Feet are worse than my hands. I've been told the inflammation causes the pressure on the nerves.

I've had this at times also but it comes and goes. I didn't know what to make of it. I would imagine the inflammation causes pressure on a lot of parts including the nerves. Makes sense but I've never spoken to the doc about it. One thing with PsA there are a lot of different pains....I've come to expect that.

I have the sharp pains in my toes also. It is quick and very sharp just making me gasp, but then it is gone, more frequent now for some reason. arghhh I have also noticed that when I step on something barefooted the pain is intense and feels like an electric shock through my body... very iicky and that pain lingers for a while. blech! I am not sure what it is but am attributing to the PA. I have tried gabapentin and Lyrica and Cymbalta, but I am allergic to them; perhaps would help you?

I hope your dr finds something to help lessen this pain for you, but above all know you are not alone and it is not in your head. :)

sooo true Dini! so many weird pains

It is amazing how the Drs including "Specialists" who just cannot come up with an answer as to WHY this is happening to some of us! It is obviously a common symptom by seeing all the "replies" to this discussion. Personally I am feeling relieved that others are suffering the same pains as me.....my Rheumy could not come up with an answer and I felt that she thought it was "all in my head" so to speak! I was taking Methotrexate and Prednisalone for five months but had to come off it because it made me so ill, now I am only taking 6,000mg of Fish Oil daily. All I can take now is Panadol.....and this doesn't even go near the pain at times....just have to live with it!

Regards to all Loz.

I can believe it's inflammation pressing on the nerves. My rheumy was not concerned about it at all. BUT in his defense, I have to believe he was concerned about my overall inflammation. My sed rate had gone up to 42. He added sulfasalazine 1000 mg to my meds 11 days ago. Except for the lovely side effects of the drugs, I am feeling much better and hurting way way less this week. I was surprised. I had begun to think the drugs were not worth the nasty side effects, as I was only getting progressively worse each month.

Hey guys,

I relate to this so well.. I am going to post a few pics.. I'm sitting at home on medical leave..due to toe surgery due to the PsA. I hope it doesn't gross anyone out. I had a bunionectomy with a Kellar implant. The PSA had taken all the cartilage from my main joint in big toe. Along with it I had a bone spur that was on the side too. Before that day. I had no idea they could replace a joint in your toe. I don't know if your symptoms are similar. …but mine started that way.. I couldn't figure out why I had so many different feelings in my foot and toe. The Dr said that either the bone spur or the cartilage being gone, that messed with the nerves.. It was a si!mole explanation.

Hope it helps...please ask your rheumy..

Yes I get that from time to time in mostly my toe nails but sometimes the fingernails. I think it is just part of psoriasis. It affects the nail beds. I have a friend who has a messed up fingernail bed on her thumb because of psoriasis.

Hi Karen,

Our son has really bad bunions in both feet. They are huge! I was talking to him yesterday about having surgery because of the pain and the fact he can't fit a lot of shoes It would be wonderful if you could please let me know how your recovery goes. Sending healing thoughts your way and wishing you a speedy recovery!

I have experienced pain in my toenails, usually my big toe on the left foot. So that is not an unusal thing to me. It probably tells us just how involved our bodies are in this disease. I have noticed the nail separating from the nail bed and the toe nail is crumbly when I clip it. Classic PsA sign.
