Milk Thistle?

I’ve just stumbled across an article which stated that some cancer sufferers who were taking MTX were also given the suppliment milk thistle (silybum) to support their liver after having higher than normal liver enzyme test result.

Has anyone heard of this or experienced this in PsA circles?

My naturopath (MD / ND) suggested I take milk thistle to see if it helps with my higher than my normal high liver enzyme levels. (She suggested the Vital Nutrients brand, as apparently brand / extraction method matters as to efficacy.)

Silymarin, the substance in milk thistle which is beneficial, consists of flavonolignands, which help repair damaged liver cells by stimulating protein synthesis. It prevents certain toxins from getting inside the liver by changing the outside layer of liver cells and it encourages cell growth. Silymarin also reduces inflammation and acts as a potent antioxidant.

Thanks nym, that’s very interesting to know, has it made any difference to you?
Will definitely keep this for future use if needed. Its amazing what you can find out…I was doing research for a work project and got side tracked when the words liver mtx and milk thistle linked up and made my mind go off at a tangent! Lol

I've heard of milk thistle being used for liver issues. In fact, an ear doctor suggested it to me once, and she took it since she liked to drink. I've never taken it myself but would consider it if my liver function was abnormal. But please check with your doctor first to be sure it's ok to take and wouldn't interact with your meds.

I've just started taking it regularly, as my liver enzymes are elevated even more than normal with my liver issues (I can't take mtx due to liver issues). I'll let you know if it makes a difference!
