Mattress topper - worth it?

Hi all do you guys have mattress toppers and do they help? I feel that my mattress is too hard sometimes. Especially when my PsA is really bad. If I lie on my side my hips will start to hurt really bad as well as my shoulders and and my back that starts to hurt. Do you think a memory foam topper will help with this? Also what thickness?

I had one..didn't have any luck with it. It wouldn't stay on bed kept shifting. It seemed to be comfortable for awhile.. But eventually started having achiness at my trigger points. I even got desperate enough to get a new mattress with a topper sadly, to say. I sleep in a recliner now. Please check with your Dr, physical therapist etc..because so many of us have different conditions that cause our current problems.. Good luck to u

We went away about six years ago and the bed was a tempurpedic. We immediately came home and bought one from Bob’s. It was much more affordable. The only potential issues are that they can be warm in the summer, but now they have “cool” ones, and they don’t bounce. I know that seems obvious, but it does make adult activities different with no bounce.

I was having pressure point aching on my firm mattress a couple of years ago, and I ended up with one of these:

The wool fleece is very cushion-y,cuddly and soft, in addition to being highly absorbent. No sweating – so cool in summer and warm in winter. I love it. We have a split king bed, so I ordered two. My DH didn’t like it. I think he just didn’t allow himself to adjust to the resilience that he wasn’t used to. Anyway, he decided that he didn’t want his. Fine with me – his went to my side of the RV bed!
The fleece topper has improved the quality of my sleep no end. A bit pricey, but much cheaper than a new mattress!

We have a deep feather mattress topper on our bed which is already fairly soft. A hard mattress absolutely kills me :-(

Last year before we went on holiday I had a mattress topper shipped out to our hotel (their beds are very firm). We're back off there in a few weeks and they are getting our topper out of storage. Without the topper I sleep badly and not for very long and struggle to walk when I get up.

We spent alot of money on a Tempur memory foam mattress a few years ago and even after persevering for many months it caused more problems than it cured for both of us - and my husband doesn't have any back or joint problems, or didn't until we got the Tempur mattress. We got our money refunded after a bit of a battle.

So yes, for me a topper is essential but personally I'd buy feather/down over memory foam and I like the look of Seenie's wool fleece. Reminds me of the vetbed I buy for my cats ....... hmmmmm I've got a 10m half roll of that somewhere .......

Thanks for everyone’s replies so far! I am a bit scared about the heat issue with the memory foam. I have never seen any other toppers like the feather or wool fleece. I live in South Africa so the shipping from Amazon might be a bit too much on such a big item. Will probably try the memory foam first then. I am also scared that my husband won’t be happy with any sort of topper. Will probably just have to bite the bullet and buy it. Here I have to choose between 7cm and 15cm (~3 and 6 inches). Thoughts?

I love mine. It mixes layers of breathable foams with memory foam.

I would avoid getting one that is fully 100% uniformly solid memory foam. Solid memory foam is hot, it traps heat and makes joints more inflamed, and level of support changes with the temperature of your room. Solid memory foam is made for air conditioned houses whose temperature doesn't change. Tempur-Pedic is an example of a solid memory foam device.

Thanks Yitsa for the advice. Is yours a whole mattress or just a topper?

I bought three different kinds, all at Kohls when they had 70% off. I put a washable mattress cover on top My husband doesn't like sinking into them and you do have to lift yourself out to roll over I ended up with two on the bed, after a few trials, and now am the princess and the pea! You may have to go with twin xl on your side of a king.

I have so much trouble with pain on the pressure points, hips and shoulders too, I really can't sleep on a regular mattress.

I love mine.

I also use a microwaved clay heat pad to go to sleep with, shoulders and auto shut off heat pad under the hips and back. Pillows for in between legs on side, from knee to ankle, and for the higher arm to rest on while I am on my side, easier on the elbows and wrists.

Hope you get some better sleep!

Yes! I have a 4 inch one. But it is 2" memory foam and 2" of other foam. I like it with the extra firmness of the other foam.

Mine is just a topper, and I think it came from Target (a well-known U.S. chain department store). But Target changes what they carry every few months.

I desperately want one of these, and had been doing some research lately. I googled these toppers and mattresses and was able to find some really good reviews and consumer report type breakdowns that give good info on which thickness works best, whether you should get the cooling gel, or what density best. I didn’t save the pages, but I bet if you did a quick search you’d get the info you need to pick a topper that would work for you. One thing with the memory foam: they can smell. It seems they have a chemical odor when they come out of the bag. It goes away, but it’s something to consider for sure.

I have a sleep number bed. Some people love them, others not so much. I LOVE MINE. I can adjust it whenever the need arises. I found the memory foam too hot. I was sweating just lying on it.

We bit the bullet and bought a latex mattress. Living in South Louisiana, I was worried about the heat issue with memory foam, and I just don't like the sinking feeling you get with those mattresses. I have to say that I love the latex mattress. I was waking up every night and having to hobble out to the recliner. Now, I sleep through the night most nights. I never would have tried one, but someone with arthritis told me to go try one at a store. You have to stay on it for a few minutes so it has time to conform to your body. My hips and shoulders don't bother me at night like they used to. Highly, highly recommend.

Nicolene,

I have a tempurpedic mattress which I love. But about a year ago it started to get kind of uncomfortable for me. We got a relatively firm mattress, one that doesn't keep on sinking, and I began to find it a little tough on my hips. So I tried a memory foam topper that we had bought for a spare bed on top of the tempurpedic and it is perfect! So now I have a 3" memory foam topper on top of the tempurpedic.

I know some people find the tempurpedic hot--and I'm someone who tends to overheat at night--but I find it to not be problematic so long as I change out the covers we use on the bed to be seasonally appropriate. I used to be a duvet all year round sleeper, but with the tempurpedic and memory foam topper there are times in the year where a light blanket is all that is required.

The only true drawback from the tempurpedic and memory foam is the weight. They are incredibly heavy to move, and even getting the fitted sheet tucked over the mattress can be a two-person job.

Love mine even travels with me

I have tried a memory form topper but find them to be too hot and there's that chemical smell. After a long research, I settled on this extra plush double thick topper that's made in USA. Have used it for close to a year and loving it so far. You can read some reviews on amzn http://amzn.to/1wX5qdF

Do you find that it helps your hips? That’s where the pressure seems to “get” me.

They do. Unfortunately, my hubby hates the mattress topper. Now, I sleep on the couch for comfort.

Get one as thick as possible, with the cool touch option. The egg crate kind of foam toppers are too wimpy for my hips. Overstock.com was my source.

YES! I now have a memory foam mattress topper on top of my memory foam mattress--which I would have preferred a little softer but she wanted a little firmer and I caved. But with the topper I no longer get raging hip pain or locked-up knees at night.
