Mattress topper - worth it?

Oh yes! My hips & shoulders are SO much more comfortable with the 2" memory foam topper we bought a year ago. The pressure on a firm mattress was killing them. For $99 it was well worth it ten times over for my comfort at night.

I have tried multiple remedies and the best purchase I’ve made was my sleep number bed. My only regret is that I didn’t go ahead and get the one that has the adjustable positions. They did have to add extra padding and they did so at no extra charge to us. I realize that not everyone can do this but they do have some excellent financing options. We paid ours off over a year and never paid a penny of interest. Besides this option, I do think toppers help. The problem we had is that the topper made it way too soft for my husband. Short of cutting a twin one to size to keep it only on my side of the bed the sleep number gave us the ability to adjust to our individual comfort. I also have fibromyalgia so sleep is a big priority. Hope this helps!

YES! I don't have one yet, but had the pleasure of sleeping on one....amazing!!

I was having pressure point aching on my firm mattress a couple of years ago, and I ended up with one of these:

The wool fleece is very cushion-y,cuddly and soft, in addition to being highly absorbent. No sweating -- so cool in summer and warm in winter. I love it. We have a split king bed, so I ordered two. My DH didn't like it. I think he just didn't allow himself to adjust to the resilience that he wasn't used to. Anyway, he decided that he didn't want his. Fine with me -- his went to my side of the RV bed!
The fleece topper has improved the quality of my sleep no end. A bit pricey, but much cheaper than a new mattress!

I would be absolutely crippled without my tempurpedic mattress and neck pillow. Before I had the money for it I used two memory foam toppers (4" total) on my regular mattress. That was over 10 years ago. I am sure that would not suffice for me at this point. I have also purchased off label memory foam mattresses for the other beds from Amazon. I cannot imagine life without them now.

Here is one caveat about memory foam: It is temperature sensitive, so if you sleep in a cold bedroom it will be as hard as a rock, which is not the effect we are all going for.

I have the gel one from Costco & love it. It makes my bed so muchore comfortable.

I bought a sleep number bed. For the first 7 or 8 years it was a blessing and more comfortable than anything I'd ever slept in. Now, though, the air bladders are stretched out and it doesn't hold air as well as is used to, so not so comfortable. I, too, am a side sleeper, and recently had to switch bed sides with my husband because I need my left knee supported, and when I sleep on my right side it is bent at an awkward angle all night and I get up in serious pain. While sleeping on my left side took some getting used to, it seems to help my knee quite a bit. I keep telling my hubby our next bed will be a memory foam one, but I really can't afford to buy a new bed at this point, so we'll have to wait and see.

Personally I sleep on a heated waterbed. It is about the ONLY place that I can get sleep, so I totally understand what you mean by a hard mattress. The problem I have with that is getting out of bed. I am going to have to raise the box to make getting up easier.

hi, I have a memory foam topper on my bed and it has made a huge difference. The bed was not too firm to start with but I too had pain in my hips whichever side I was lying on. Now it is so much softer and more comfortable and I would really recommend it but I guess it will not work for everyone, but worth a try. they are not cheap but I am so pleased I bought one.

Yes Farmfresh! Speaking about bed heights - I keep telling my husband we can't get the bed frame HE likes because it's less than 23" off the ground!!! He just shakes his head and says, "Isn't that better?" No, because I can't get up!

I have a really bad right hip (bone chips from having a rod pounded in to place) on top of the PsA. I tried every thing to get sleep, and keep myself from turning on to my right side. We bought a 3 inch memory foam two years ago and it was the first time I was able to sleep through the night without waking up from the hip pain. Before the topper I had injections, heating pads, etc. and nothing allowed me to sleep through the night. Because I now sleep through the night I have to limit myself on the number of hours in bed, because an extra long night of sleep causes back pain in the morning. It was a lifesaver for me. For what it's worth we got ours at Bed Bath and Beyond (my budget) while it was on sale for the holidays, they are not cheap.

Taller is FAR better with me for everything. I am 5'9" tall. My regular vehicle that I drive is a Ford F150 4x4. I have all kinds of people that comment on that. "How can you drive such a big truck?" Fact is I can get in and out of it easy because the seat is just about 1/2 inch higher than my butt. My husband used to drive a Honda Accord. Getting in and out of the Accord was a misery. Bending swollen knees, gripping with swollen hands, and bending a painful spine made me want to just stay home. We recently replaced that vehicle with a Subaru Outback. The FIRST test for the new car was if I could get in and out easily and it passed with flying colors thanks to its raised height from the 4x4 tires.

If you want to demonstrate for your husband give him a foot stool to sit on at the dinner table for a week. Unless he is a very active person standing up from that after a long meal will be difficult for him too.

That idea about the stool is FANTASTIC!

I had a problem with finding a spot that didn't hurt when I laid in the bed, I now have a Gel memory foam topper as well as a gel memory foam pillow, between the two of them I'm sleeping much better and rarely wake up in serious pain anymore just a little achy so I wish I had gotten it sooner. Hope you find something that works for you.

I have used toppers, but they were never thick enough and shifted. I eventually splurged and got the gel memory foam mattress and pillow as well, and it is by far the most comfortable thing I’ve ever slept on.

My husband has eliminated all his neck pain and 90% of his headaches with a $100 Tempurpedic contour-style memory foam pillow. It's too firm for me, but it has really improved his sleep! For the prior 10 yrs he'd been using the Contour Products classic contour pillow. But they'd wear out and we had to buy a new one every 6-9 months at $35 a pop.

Catherine, What brand did you buy?

We broke down and bought a natural latex mattress a few years ago… It provides firm support, but causes no discomfort to the pressure points. It is heavenly! The latex is encased in a bamboo fabric which prevents overheating. We added a bamboo mattress protector for double duty… You can purchase bamboo mattress pads, sheets, and pillow cases, if you find your foam mattress is too warm for you…

I bought a tempura-pedic mattress and it saved me! It was worth every penny!!

I bit the bullet and bought the Tempurpedic cloud supreme breeze, LOVE it. Pricey, but worth it (Mattress Firm had 4 years same as cash!) I also sprung for the adjustable base - think the old "craftmatic" adjustable bed. That's great for post foot surgery, or just hanging out reading in bed. The "cloud" refers to the softer version, I believe Rhapsody is firmer. The breeze is the cooler option. I used to have a 2" memory foam topper but my husband said it was hot and he couldn't roll on it (I thought it was comfy and about 100 bucks.) If I sleep on a regular inner spring mattress now, I feel bruised along my hips and shoulders for days. I just bought an off brand memory foam mattress for my travel trailer, but I haven't slept on it yet. It was about 200 and it got a lot of good reviews as well, from overstock.com.

Oh, I forgot to mention that my hubby also put bed risers underneath, so I no longer have to work at getting out of bed. I can just roll right off the side, land on my tootsies, and I'm good to go.
