Humira and Oral Surgery

Good morning!

I have been on Humira for about 2 months now and now I will have to oral surgery with an implant to come. I don't think my dentist or oral surgeon are very informed on Humira. I have requested antibiotics and will start those 24h before sgy.....should I stop the Humira and if so when and how long? Do I need to discuss with my Derm who put me on it?

Thanks again for sharing the knowledge!! :)

I would talk to the derm. They may want you to stop the Humira for a period of time prior to surgery.

Yep, definitely talk to your derm. I was told I’d need to stop it for a few weeks at least for even very minor procedure.

ALWAYS ask your Rheumatologist/Dermatologist first. ALWAYS !

So....I called my Derm who prescribed the Humira and she said "Go with what the surgeon recommends"! I honestly don't think the Oral Sgn has any idea about Humira! GRRRR!

He knows his infection risks. I've seen it go both ways for oral surgery. Frankly if he is doing an implant in an arthris patient, he is pretty confident in is abilities. has he already installed the post?

I agree with Lamb here. Humira is becoming more and more common. Certainly he has had a few patients come through his doors who are taking it. If not, there very likely has a colleague to run it by first. Give him a call...if he has no idea, follow back with the derm. They will give you direction at that point.

I am scheduled for surgery on 5/30/14.....I will check back with the Oral Sgns nurse....
