Help with hair!

So along with all the fun of PsA my hair has become so dry and brittle its like straw! I was about to just shave it all off! but my sister suggested this shampoo and conditioner to me and eventually I went ahead and spent the money and bought it, Now $5.97 for a shampoo and another $5.97 for conditioner doesnt sound like alot of money but with all the doctors and meds I have had lately it is especially with me not being able to work currently but I did it and it was amazing how soft and silky my hair was after using just the shampoo....and then after the conditioner it was even better,

I have my old hair back!! its so pretty again, soft and silky no fly aways If any of you need help with dry, brittle starw like hair I suggest Loreal ever cream its amazing!

I hve psoriasis on my scalp. It's more like dandruff that won't go away. So I had been using psoriasis and dandruff shampoos that really damaged and dried my hair. I understand where you are coming from. I read before coming to this group that warm coconut oil was good for the scalp and skin, and I have been using it, especially when I had a real itchy all over body like attack. But on the scalp it is awesome and works like a conditioner, my hair feels really silky and smooth after using coconut oil, and my scalp is not dry and itchy.

It's great you found something that works, Amanda!

I second coconut oil!!! It does wonders for SO many things, including hair!

Dittos about the coconut oil!

Oh my gosh....I really needed to hear that!!! I have been getting really frustrated with mine. I use salon quality sulfate free shampoos as I colour my hair to cover up the "greys". My sister who is a Hair Stylist recommended it to me (Pureology), and it is a good shampoo and conditioner, I used it before, years ago, before I had this condition and on these meds. But for the last 6 months or so, I don't know if it is the disease, or the meds, or a combination of the two, but my hair is horrible, dry, straw, frizz!!!

I have no problems with Psoriasis anywhere, scalp or otherwise, just PsA...I am going out today to get me some of the L'oreal Evercream shampoo and conditioner to give that a try...certainly cant hurt.

Thanks for the info!!!!

Hi nym,

Do you apply the coconut oil to your hair or do you take it internally? I use it on the grand kids for their psoriasis, and I know it is recommended as a cooking oil, salad oil and some just take a spoonful, but I am leery of putting it in my hair. I do not have psoriasis, but the meds and PsA are killing my hair, really thinning it too!

Thanks,

SK

I’m going to try coconut oil. I feel you’re pain, my long, long hair is (was?) one of my favorite features. Now the dandruff, and the hair destroying dandruff shampoo, and my embarrassment going to the hairdresser because of the dandruff…well, you know.

Just wanted to update, I have been using the Loreal Evercream Shampoo and conditioner ameuller mentioned for about 2 weeks now and it has made a HUGE difference in my hair!!! Also is helping the colour stay in alot better!!! If you are having problems with your hair being dry from all the meds, etc....I would certainly give it a try. I never had the problem before all the meds!! Thanks ameuller!

Hi Dani,

I tried a Loreal for colored hair and it was very good for my hair too, what I have left of it, it keeps falling out. Could be the Lyrica, could be the Autoimmune disorders, and it could even be an undetected Thyroid problem. I understand it is hard to get it to show up.

Oh the meds can be nearly as bad as what we take them for. You have very pretty hair, glad you found something to help! Something besides another med! Thanks for the info!

SK

Thanks SK....I am hoping that the Methotrexate doesn't cause me to lose my hair!!! I also have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, but it is controlled by meds and has been for years. The texture and dryness has changed so much since I have been on meds for the PsA it is remarkable...but this shampoo has made a huge difference!!! Thanks for the compliment on the hair...I just cut off about 4 inches and am now letting the natural curls/waves go as my hands are too painful to manage the blowdryer and flatiron anymore!!! PsA Sucks!!!! LOL!!

Hi Dani,

Hopefully the doc has you on enough folic acid to prevent hair loss, mine had to be upped, it did help, but the hair loss started before that, it used to have more wave in it, and even the hairdresser who cuts it commented on how straight it had become, she said it was from the meds.

Most of my hair loss is the front bang area, I keep making more and more of the hair on the top of my head into bang. Guess the day is coming when I will have to do some rig-up like Bret Michaels wears!!! Bandana for my casual days for that rock and roll look, some of the scarfs I used to wear with my business suits for a different look, to give me that old woman European refuge look, then there are those things the guys on motorcycles wear, skull caps, I guess you call them for that harder edge!! LOL!!!

I had purchased some good shampoo from a health food store for thinning hair, but it was not for colored hair, and it took the color out in a hurry, that was really scary!!! I know the day is coming when I just take down the mirrors!

I hope the shampoo keeps on working for you, Paul Mitchell is really good too, but expensive!

Hang in there and enjoy as much of your youth as you can, you are young and pretty, it slips away quickly!

SK

Dani,

I am so glad that my suggestion has helped someone else! congrats!

I want to cry! I am so glad I searched for this topic and found this thread! My hair used to grow so fast, 8-10 inches a year, thick and full and healthy. Since my rx, I think it's grown maybe 3 inches this year, dry, brittle, frizzy, making me crazy! I color it to keep the early grays away (all around my face, been gray since 21, rx at 34), and every day I just want to cry. I've tried almost everything trying to help my hair grow out and stay pretty instead of the straw consistency it is now. Whoever started this, all the suggestions, thank you so much! Now I have some hope!

L'Oreal ever cream shampoo? Is that what it is called? thanks Frances

I was just diagnosed last week - what causes the hair to be straw like? the medicine? methotrexate?

Mtx and other PsA meds can wreak havoc on hair. Remicade makes my hair fall out.

To answer the question from months ago - I both ingest coconut oil (I use it in cooking and baking) and occasionally do coconut oil treatments on my hair.

Glad to see this thread has been brought back to life!

Unfortunately, I don't have much advice, but could use some suggestions.

Over the last 6 months, I've had to start using Neutrogena T-Gel, which has really helped with the flakes, but has KILLED my long hair, which I've been growing for over a decade. While I know it's not as serious as the health issues we face, not having my long hair would be a big thing for me,and I'm at the point where I'm considering cutting it. So, does anyone have recommendations for shampoos that will have the same effect on flakes as the Neutrogena, without making my hair like straw? I'd really rather avoid the scissors...

I do use copious amounts of Pantene conditioner, which helps (at least I can get a comb through it!) but not nearly enough.

Hi Emily,

So sorry to hear about your hair, and I feel your pain. Do you think it's the disease or the meds that have changed your hair? If you find anything that works, let me know, and sorry I can't be of more help!

Frances, it's not just the meds. I'm not currently on any. I think it's the disease itself, the havoc my immune system is wreaking, the resources that are being devoted to grinding away at my joints and independence... Oy.

I don't use shampoos or conditioners on my hair, as I find my hair worse with them. I use coconut oil treatment every once in a while and wash my normally oily hair with a baking soda rinse. My kids with curly hair use apple cider vinegar rinse on their hair and it's gorgeous. I have a child who has allergies to most soaps, detergents, etc, so shampoo isn't usually to be found in our house!!!
