Hand Surgery Recovery

It's now been 2 1/2 weeks since I had surgery on my thumb to stabilize it. I'll be in a cast until 6 weeks post surgery, but am slowly but surely gaining use of my hand back. The first week was bad. . . I couldn't go near that hand without it hurting. I'm now able to hold lightweight objects for more than a moment, and can pet my cats. I'm getting a lot of help with housework on the things I absolutely can't do, such as dishes, and my 11 year old is in charge of my hair.

The hand surgeon already mentioned therapy after the cast is off. He also was very clear that it will take time. I'm good with that.

Hi Stoney!
Hope it heals up quickly. I had elbow surgery twice (on the same arm) and I could hardly wait to get the cast off. Each time, though, I was terrified to move my arm once the cast was off for fear I'd undo something! Has your kiddo done anything adventurous with your hair yet? Glitter? Colors? Ribbons?

Oh--and by the way, kudos for one-handed typing!

Thanks Jane. I've gotten good at it. So far she hasn't done anything crazy, just some odd braid patterns in the back. As long as it winds up bun like, I'm good. The other day I forgot to ask her to do my hair before she left for school. I have a neighbor as backup hair stylist.

I'm very worried about undoing. I had a tendon transfer, so I'm worried about the chance of it somehow tearing/ripping out.

Glad you are getting some use back Stoney…as has been said it will take time and patience. Now have visions of you sporting peacock feathers in your hair as your youngster get adventurous;)

I am so glad you are getting some use of your hand back. Every little bit returning helps us feel more normal after surgery. What no pictures of your hair creations? Ah come on let us see!

No good pics. And don't let my daughter get any ideas either!

You still healing up well?

Thanks for asking Jane. Slower than I'd like. I'll be getting the cast off in just under 3 weeks, and I'm pretty worried about it. I still have swelling in my thumb, a lot, and my index finger on that hand has decided to join the party and become a sausage. I'm also trying to figure out why my whole right hand, and the thumb the most, are browner than the other hand. Not bruised, brown. I'm not pale by any means, but that's a bit odd.
