Facial Twitching

I have just been diagnosed with AS and pa. Always had pain in the lower spine but upper ad neck are new. The pain in my upper spine is very new for me and the neck is bad as well. This morning, waking with a stiff neck and very sore back (getting used to) I discovered that the right side of my face is twitching from the eyebrow to my mouth. It has been hours and it is a bit of a nuisance. Is this related to the inflammation and pressure in my neck and spine? Anyone else experience this?

The only time I have experienced twitches for eyes/facial to all over my body was when my seratonin was low, I had tapered off of an antidepressant. It resolved when I resumed the antidepressant but drove me crazy and was getting more intense while I was off of it. I hope this helps though I am not sure how it will! I am sending hugs and prayers to you.

I had this happen, and it still occurs occasionally. I had twitching in my face, tingling, numbness, etc. all over. It resembled MS in a lot of ways. After loads of testing. . . .Nothing was found. The specialist that I saw implied that it may very well have been due to inflammation, but there were no lesions of any sort to indicate MS. But it was springtime when it started, and that is when I flare every year for the BIG flare, so who knows. I had no medication changes anywhere related to it, and have no problems with my neck or upper spine, and no irregularities on the films. Oh, and let's not forget the horrendous cramping. It recurs, but not with the same intensity.

Based on what I went through, I wouldn't rush to the doctor again unless it was totally unmanageable, but that is because I have already ruled out medical conditions that could be related. I feel for you. . . The facial twitching made me a bit crazy, and it was at its worst for a few months. I was on the verge of getting botox when it abated.

My eye lids twitch while I’m flaring. My rheumy told me it was because I am sleep deprived. usually I have insomnia while flaring too…
Totality drives me crazy. The only nice thing is my family knows I’m serious when I say I’m too tired (they can see for themselves)
so my suggestion is try to rest…

Hi, there is a thing called ‘tetany’ which is the over excitement of nerves due to low available calcium in the blood… calcium is one of the substances needed for nerve coductivity. It causes spasm twitching mostly in limbs but I have seen it with facial involvement. I hasten to stress that this is something I’ve seen in DIALYSIS PATIENTS and although I have NO medical insight into autoimmune disorders, wonder if there could be some link between twitching and low calcium?..there have been discussions about low vit D3 in PsA patients and vit D is partly responsible for absorbtion of calcium in the gut and bone metabolism … It maybe a giant fanciful leap but I’m sort of thinking out loud here! Lol
Have your vit D3 levels been tested?

I had a left eye twitch for around five weeks. Every day, every few minutes or so. I asked my GP about it and he said that he didn’t know what was causing it and that it should go away of its own accord. It did and it hasn’t returned.

Louise thanks for this bit of insight as I get facial twitching occasionally and have always put it down to fatigue. As I get foot spasms in both feet and into the front of my lower legs I have always treated this as low calcium ,magnisium and potassium. I never thought the facial tics could be realated.

Interesting. As soon as I was diagnosed, the Rheumy prescribed all those supplements.
