Ache or Pain or Stiffness

I'm trying to figure out my hips. I go to yoga three times a week and walk a little each day but have a sedentary job. My hips got so stiff and sore a while back that standing after being seated for a while was incredibly painful and I had difficulty supporting my own weight (which isn't much!). I ended up getting steroid shots in each hip bursa. It did the trick.

Currently I feel quite limber and I'm not in much general pain, but I'm noticing that my hips are starting to get staff and achy again. I notice this mostly when going up stairs. I can complete a heated yoga class with no problems (during or after) but it feels like my hips are going back to where they were when I needed the steroid shots. Oh, and I have a hot tub at home and soak 3-5 times a week.

Anyone got any advice? Any "me too" empathy? I don't want to have to keep getting shots and I'm doing my absolute best to stay active and loose.

I hate my hips. They always hurt. Be careful with your workout, some activities will make it worse. If you do any lifting, use your shoulders and legs to avoid too much strain on your lower back and hips.

That's doesn't sound good. Is the Yoga you are doing putting strain on your hips ? I've been so reluctant to start exercise again because I know my hands got worse from using small weights. Sorry I haven't had this particular problem. My hips are one thing that's good for me ( knock on wood ). Maybe you should slow it down and then work your way back up slowly. It may give you an idea of what the trigger is.

No advice, sorry. I have different hip problems. Mine are lack of stability, very minor joint space narrowing, and some stiffness. I haven't had any shots, but have done PT for my hips.

I posted on another topic regarding pain in the area. Stretching is helpful. I suffer from a lot of hip (buttock pain) and burning with increased activity has been a big issue for me, along with getting up after sitting. I understand you are doing yoga and this is beneficial, however stretching the area is also very helpful. I too have a hot tub and do some of the stretches while in the hot tub(great place to move the joints). On really bad days taking celebrex has helped and during that time it is usually a sign to rest as any increased inflammation will cause a lack of functioning period. Physical therapy would probably help, there you can learn more about the area and how to stretch properly. I worked with a sports therapist and physical therapist over my years of running as I suffered from both piriformis syndrome and bursitis. Now, I go weeks with both hips feeling like I have bursitis in both of them...when it gets bad the pirifomis muscle is impacted...which creates sciatic pain...a literal pain in the butt! Hope you find what works for you :-)

I've also had great relief with cortisone shots, however was told they weaken the tendons and ligaments and they don't recommend having to many. It's a tough call because this disease can impact ligaments, tendons and muscles, however these are important to strengthen as they help carry our weight and is of a huge importance when it comes to protecting weight bearing joints.

Thanks for the ideas, Sybil. The only thing yoga does for my hips that is "difficult" are those hip opening positions (like pigeon). They are helping increase flexibility and could be at issue although I have to say I'm REALLY careful these days. I'm going to start lying down at work. And I've asked for a standing desk when I move offices. My boss has agreed to this but I don't know when my move is so for now I'll just lie down on the job!

My rheumy recommended yoga so I'll talk to him about it when I see him next week. He gave me some stretches to do, too, so I'll be sure I'm keeping up on those. How's old Blighty? I heard Prince Charles can retire today...but he's donating his pension to charity.I do miss the old country!

Thought I'd start with the blooming obvious 'cos sometimes I overlook that, for myself anyway.

Thanks for your input, TaraLynn. I'll be asking my doctor about all this on the 20th.

Mataribot, Stoney, Dini,

thanks for your input. I won't be giving up the yoga any time soon but I'll be looking at what kinds of stretches or other things I can do to keep strong and loose. Maybe I could work from the hot tub??

Weren't you doing Bikram yoga (hot yoga) or was that someone else? Birkram is as you know is limited to 26 poses, which actually can lead to some problems. They are difficult poses (but hey bending over to pick up my socks is difficult for me) with a load of NSAIDS and heat, it pretty easy to overdo and create a chronic owie.

I do yoga a couple times a week and tai-chi at least once and of course Wii with my grandaughter every night (love the hulu hoop) but even then a go through a stretch routine a couple times a day in my office especially concentrating on my SI's other wixe my hips/butt are so sore i can't make to the espresso stand.....

Wow lamb! That’s incentive…keep limbering up or you wont make the coffee stand! I hear ya  Currently 3/4 the way through a late shift with a steaming cuppa coffee in front of me

Funny you should say about hips Jane, never had much problems other than a thunk sound which we thought was in my neck but its my right hip. Had pain at the top of my left hip for a few days now and its at that stage where a new pain starts and it catches me out as I’m not used to it…seems worse when I sit, just cant get comfortable…commiserations:(

Wasn't me, lamb. I do heated yoga but NOT Bikram (that is way too hot for me). The kind I do it relatively laid back (but not as laid back as Hatha). I will be asking my rheumatologist about stretches I might do because this stiffness is way inside the joint but the pain is right on the bursa on the low hip/outer thigh.

Sorry for your "thinking sound" Louise. Trouble sitting for me is usually followed by trouble sleeping. Here's hoping some heat and stretching will loosen it all back up again.

Well, it’s not entirely clear from your post what’s exacerbating the situation, so ill just give you my story.

The sedentary thing for me is the killer. In the same way, fluid styles of yoga (or gym, weightlifting, whatever) are very positive. But anything that requires holding a pose for a significant amount of time is not. And oddly, really repetitive types of exercise like stairs… Worse than being stationary.

I haven’t yet found someone who understands this to pay lots of cash to so I understand it as well - I’m sure I will one day - but in the meantime, it’s what works for me

Hi Laura,

your description sounds pretty nasty. Sorry your hips are so bad. Still no relief yet for me. Doctor on Thursday. I did a little less yoga than usual this week and my hips are getting worse so I'm proceeding with the idea that there's no correlation. The pain is deep inside and also along the outer edge from where the IT bad/bursa intersect and then up in a vertical line to the side of my buttocks as far north as behind the knobbly bits of your hip bones near your waist. So, pretty much the entire joint.

I'm still having a hard time sleeping. My joints are really bad right now and I can't get comfortable nor can I shut down the almost constant achy tingly pain. I don't think the Humira is cutting it for me. At least not yet and I've taken 5 shots. Well, I guess we'll see what the good doctor says on Thursday. Hope your new physiotherapist understands your "issues".

My current super-owwy hips and SI joints came from an infection that drained off my coccyx. Hips feel more like elastic bands that have lost their spring and zing than like something that needs stretching out. Hopefully my new Physio will understand this without palm-greasing. And I don't think that 'being able to mobilize with ease' is an unreasonable treatment objective.

How are you getting along with loosening up and trying to sleep?

no advise just sympathy I'm scheduled for 3 injections in the next 6 weeks. I'm getting my ankle done today then both SI joint 2 weeks apart. i'm gonna feel like a pin cushion. but i am really hoping for some relief.

Hey Dakotasun,

I had cortisone in injections in both hips a while back. It helped so much. I wonder, though, why this has come back. And so quickly. I guess I'll know more tomorrow when I see my doctor. good luck with your shots. I'm positive that you'll get relief.

Heya pal. Can't give advice, as yoga is my nemesis. I fall down and go "boom" too easily (not to mention the not being able to get back up off the mat - snort). But I can and am sending warm fuzzy thoughts and zen hugs your way.

Thanks for the well-wishes. Looking forward to me Dr. appointment much more than usual. I like to give him lots to work with! I’ll keep you posted.

Hi Jane,

Sending lots of positive vibes for a productive meeting with your doctor tomorrow and many wishes for an exploration of your pain and suffering that results in relief

Hahah! That’s funny. My GF feels similarly about yoga. The yin/yang love/hate of yoga. Should be a book. Thanks for thinking of me. I’ll let you know what my awesomely fabulous Dr. has to say tomorrow.
