hi all, so there is pretty much an issue with my left eye, being red on and off. The left side is where I have the most Proriasis. I have an referral to see the Opthalmologist, so I had better go and do that.
Just a bit of a bummer looking in the mirror - it's not a good look.
Any tips would be helpful. Not going to let it get me down too much..sigh!
Will eating gluten-free help?? - I know this has probably been discussed before.
And I guess I had better chuck out eye make up and start again with that?
Thanks for reading.
Are they getting any closer to a cure for this thing?? :)
I have been there. When I went to an ophthalmologist they did a slit test to check for inflammation and though they couldn't see any they were going to give me a steroid shot in the eye if it wasn't better the next time.
By the next time I had a recent flare treated with steroids that also happened to make my eye better.
Because I also have allergies I use a antihistamine eye drop every a.m. I think it reduces my inflammation, Have you just had the redness in the white of the eye, like inflammation with pain or an infection like pink eye (super itchy) or are you having the psoriasis on the edge of the lids. I've had all three at different times.
There is so much going on with us the Doctors often haven't seen our type of problems. Staying on my anti inflammatory seems to be the best for my eyes but steroids actually have started cataracts in the year in between eye checks.
I was afraid of uveitis but am sure I did not have that. So, shows what I know! Just make sure they know your auto-immune condition.
Thanks Dot and Stoney. It's just red on the inside white of the eye, and red inside the lower lid. Not itchy, just a bit sore. I wake up with it all of a sudden, of a morning and then after a couple of days it goes again. Very annoying. Going gluten free should help shouldn't it? sorry if I sound ignorant - new to all this. And I will get myself along to the opthalmologist to get it checked. Yes I will make sure they know I have PA. If anyone else knows what you can do to keep eye redness under control? that would be great.
I look like count dracula two or three times a year. I seem to mystify every doctor out there. What works for me is alternating hot and cold compressives a round of pred seems to get rid of the issue. I am not a fan of diets, not unless it’s part of a more permanent lifestyle change.
Going gluten free is only going to help if you have an allergy to gluten - if not, it’s just likely to be inconvenient and expensive.
If your eye is feeling sore and scratchy, go to your pharmacy and ask what drops they recommend for dry eye - they help me quite a lot.
And as Stoney says - get to that eye doctor. Though what you are encountering now may just seem annoying, PsA does cause serious eye damage in a small number of people. And it’s possible they might have dilute steroid eye drops that you could use to clear up the red (not many do that these days).
Jen pointed out it might be dry eye. What you're describing certainly sounds like it could be dry eye. I know that dry eye sounds more annoying than anything else, but it can be related to inflammation, and severe dry eye can damage your eye. I was diagnosed with Sjogren's last year, after my always dry eyes and mouth got much worse suddenly, so that I was having trouble swallowing, sores all over my mouth, and mild ulcerations in my eyes.
If you decide to use lubricating drops in your eyes while you wait to see the eye doctor, make certain that these are lubricating drops. The rule that I was given was that if I was using drops more than four times a day, they needed to be preservative free.
You can also try warm compresses on your eyes, and see if this helps any.

Louise–so sorry you’re saddled with this. Shame Halloween has already passed us by because you would have been able to pull off the pirate patch no problems. Get to the eye doctor. You need to figure this put pronto. Good luck!
I can't emphasize enough how important it is to see an opthomologist. My FIRST PsA symptoms were eye problems. Redness can mean uveitis, or some other problem related to inflammation. This can lead to very serious issues if not treated.
Going gluten free will do nothing for you if you are having eye problems. Eye issues are nothing to fool around with. You could lose your vision.
