I know I have asked this before but yesterday I felt deflated. I went to the ortho appointment to look at my hip. (I am deciding if my hip needs to be replaced. Which it is fine he says just strained because of my knee) So I proceeded to talk to him about the replacement and asked about has he done any surgeries with people who are on biologics. He proceeded to tell me has, etc. I said my rhumey explained to me that I needed to be off one week prior, during and one week after surgery. The ortho said oh no you have to be off of them the whole time of rehab. I like patients to be off 6-8 weeks after surgery. I just stared into space…10-11 weeks off. I said I would go into a whole body flare and the PT would be worthless. I walked out of there without a date and thinking just cut the leg off. Question is has anyone had a doctor say 6-8 weeks after? I heard 1-2 weeks after which would a total of 4 weeks.
I have only spoken to my Rheumy about general surgery, not joint replacement.
His feedback was that I needed to be clear of the biologic - mines Humira in a two week cycle - so the surgery date would need to be two weeks after my last shot minimum.
Then for minor surgery he felt a week would be ok, major two weeks is better, just in the basis to be sure it is healing well, and no infection will rear it’s ugly head. My Rheumy is actually very conservative.
It seems very likely PT whilst in a flare will be of limited use. Is there any chance your Rheumy can talk to the surgeon? And if not, can you try another surgeon?
