In a collaborative effort, the Arthritis National Research Foundation and the National Psoriasis Foundation funded a two-year, $100,000 grant to advance psoriatic arthritis research.

The first recipient is Elaine Husni, Ph.D. of the Cleveland Clinic. Her project, entitled "Cardiovascular biomarkers that may confer an increased risk of atherosclersosis in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis," will continue until June, 2012.

Project Summary: There is rapidly growing evidence that arthritis patients with the autoimmune forms of the disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and psoriatic arthritis, have an increased risk of heart disease compared with the general population. Dr. Husni’s study on psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis can serve as a model to explore the role of inflammation and heart disease.

Although the association is well established between inflammatory and early heart disease, the underlying causes, remain unclear. Specifically, this study will help to identify and characterize the cardiovascular biomarkers in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis that may allow earlier detection of those patients at risk for atherosclerosis.
