Hair loss

I was wondering if anyone had hair loss while on methotrexate l know its a possibility as a side effect and I know I’m sounding vein but I’m scared stiff about loosing my hair… Any advice? Please

I completely understand the issue. One way to lower the risk of losing hair is to take folic acid with the MTX. If you don't have a prescription for it, make sure to get one.

I never thought I was that vain about my hair, but mine has thinned from Arava, and it definitely bothers me.

I’m really sorry to hear that, it must be really hard for you,not really sure what to say

Oh and I do take folic acid, thanks stoney

I have taken methotrexate for about three years, and I have lost hair. Also, my hair "makeup" has changed, and not for the better. I do take folic acid, too, but I have still had issues with major changes in my hair. You're not alone, and wanting to feel good about yourself isn't vanity...

I’m really scared its really overwhelming I’m sorry I know your all going through this too, really sorry pinkcamochick

It's ok! I deal with it, and you will, too...Honestly, no one but me knows I've lost hair. Well, my husband does, as he sees it in the shower and in my brush. My hair still looks good. I just know it's not 'the same.' Don't worry til you have to, girl. All will be well!!!!!

Thank you pinkcamo chick, I’m sure your right and bless you

And same to you! :) If you ever need to vent on this topic, I'm your girl! hahahah

I take Leukovoren 6 hours after MTX to decrease hair loss along with folic acid. I also use Rogain at least 3-5 times a week. Wash once a week with Revita Hair growth shampoo. Use Argan oil on long ends to add back moisture. Sleep on satin/silk pillow case with satin night cap to decrease moisture loss. Take extra hair vitamins, do gentle brushing and wear protective braids everyday. If you feel vain about your hair then I must be vain too. I’ve noticed increase shedding with MTX but when I’m in my 60’s, I want to have full use of my hands so it is what it is. If you go to the Longhair community forums, you’ll find a handful of long hair folks that take MTX.

I take Mtx, I have very long hair, the only difference with my hair lose is, just noticing that more hair falls out than usual. I do take folic acid. Its not as dramatic as you think. This was one if my concerns at first too. I would ask your doc for folic acid if you don’t already take it.

Of course, everyone different. Hope this helps.

I was on MTX for 3 months and just stopped taking in a few weeks ago. I noticed the hair loss but it was as julittle described as shedding. No large amounts or bald spots and since I discontinued the med it has recovered. I should mention that I was taking folic acid and still lost hair. I stopped MTX because of the abundance of mouth sores that didn't go away with increased folic acid. I also think my doc wanted to get to a biologic anyway...

I did see an improvement in my PsA with the MTX and sorta miss it now. I am as sore and stiff as ever waiting to start my new med...Good luck and I hope it works well for you..

I'm not on mtx, but I'm one of the one percent or something like that that lose a good amount of hair on Remicade. Mine falls out and also breaks. I cut my hair shorter and shorter until just last week I had my husband shave it. It was quite liberating, actually, albeit cold here in CT! LOL I have five kids and they were incredibly excited for me to shave my head. I have two boys and one girl who have either shaved their head bald (2 boys ... one then let it grow in a bit, and had it shaved into a mohawk last summer) or gotten super short, spikey cut (my older daughter, when she was seven, to show off her newly pierced ears - she also dyed it fire engine red!). I own quite an array of bandannas, tichels, and scarves, which I wore regularly anyway to cut down on the amount of hair I was leaving places.

Here are a couple blog posts on the matter, including one with a pic of my buzzed hair...
