Hair Loss with MTX

Hello,

I've been taking Methotrexate for about six months now and have noticed my hair is thinning.

Has anyone had experience with this? I see hair loss listed as a possible side effect but wonder if

it will continue?

Thanks for your input.

Sharon

Sharon,

I've only been on methotrexate for ten weeks, and only see more hair in my hairbrush and falling around house, but not much. The daily prescription for folic acid keeps hairloss under control according to my Doctor. Are you on folic acid?

Kim

Sharon,

What dosage do you take and what other meds are you on if I may ask?

Kim

you need to supplement with Folic Acid to offset these effects.

I take eight tablets a week, each 2.5. Take folic acid daily and small dose of Pred.

This topic and similar ones have come up again and again. Do search older posts to find even more comments and suggestions on hair loss. I for one am struggling with it lately. I've been on mtx for over 7 yrs, so it's not related to that. Stress has an effect on hair loss and my dr. told me that the hair will fall out 3-6 months after the "big" stressor. Hang in there, the hair will come back.

I’ve been on MTX for 10 months and am taking folic acid but have recently noticed my hair thinning and falling more than usual. I’m worried because my hair is naturally very thin. I use it short now so that I don’t pull it when brushing. I’ll mention it to my dr next time I see him and see what he has to say,

I started MTX 8 months ago, and stopped it 2 months ago and switched to leflunomide (Arava). Now my hair is thinning, definitely. I've been taking 1mg of folic acid throughout. I'm hoping that it is temporary, because one of my temples is now nearly completely gone. Very disturbing. The other one likely won't be far behind.

Thanks to all who took time to share their experiences. I will look up older posts.

Thanks for the encouragement, Lynden. I guess an ugly comb-over is a small price to pay for manageable pain!
