It's been almost 1 month since my dermatologist told me I may have psoriatic arthritis. After many tests, today I started my first dose of hydroxychloroquine. I know this is the start of a long road filled with uncertainty. But, I have hope that I can manage this and possibly get back to "normal".
Sorry you are dealing with PsA. Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) was a good drug for me for several years. It seems to have lost its punch, so I'm trying other meds now. Regular eye exams are recommended with Plaquenil. I had no major problems from it...a spot on my ankle that looked like a bruise. No biggie. I hope the Plaquenil helps you as much as it helped me!
Thanks for the comment, Byrd. My rheumatologist mentioned needing regular eye exams as well.
I’ve been on plaquenil for almost two weeks now. Hard to say if I notice a difference due to the meds. A couple of days after I started, I had a decrease in swelling of my fingers and a little less stiffness in the morning. I’ve been doing acupuncture as well, so not sure if the improvement was due to that or the meds, or perhaps a combination of both? I know it can take a couple of months before you notice the meds are working, so I’m still waiting to see if it gets even better.
What was your experience when you first started Plaquenil? Did it take a couple of months before you felt a difference? When it did finally work, did the arthritis decrease significantly?
I noticed improvements at two weeks, but in no way is that typical. Doc told me it would take 2-3 months for full benefit, and that was correct. I did keep noticing improvements up to about three months. The first thing I saw was a decrease in fatigue, and wow, was I ready for that! Joint improvements followed, and yes, it was dramatic. SI joints were first to improve, followed by my lower back, neck, elbows and fingers. I think I started it in '08 and last summer I began to have problems with my toes, so doc thinks it might have lost its effectiveness. She recommends stopping it, and trying it again later if need be. I'm on MTX now and Plaquenil, but I think the Plaq will be gone next month when I see her. I had no real problems with it except that discoloration on my ankle. No big deal. If you have other questions, please message me. I'll be happy to help if I can!
