Do any of the PsA drugs cause weight gain? I've taken several types of drugs and have gained weight on some and lost on others. I was wandering if anyone else has had the same experience.
Omg yes... I am on both Lyrica and Cymbalta... I have gained 30 lbs.. total.. Im sure i could lose 10 on my own.. by really watching what I eat... but I used to maintain my weight very well....
But, what choice do we have.... the pain vs weight gain.. hmmmmm.... I choose the latter.. at this point....
I cant walk very far... my knees wont let me.. but I do use a recumbant bike daily... and do yoga...
Just to keep myself going.... Take care..

We take so many different drugs, and they all have different SEs, so who can tell. But what I do know is that PsA sufferers tend to be overweight more than the general population (or even RA sufferers), for whatever reason. They are also more likely to be insulin resistant/have metabolic syndrome than the average person. That, in turn, goes hand in hand with a tendency to gain weight, diabetes and heart problems. (I worded this carefully so that Lamb wouldn’t feel the need to give us a grad school lecture on correlation and causation. LOL! But if we’re lucky he will anyway …)
I haven't had any issues with weight changes with meds. I've been on plaquenil, leflunomide, MTX, and NSAIDs, not all at the same time. What specific medications or classes were you talking about?
Biologics--Enbrel, MTX, Celebrex, I have changed my diet and I am more active and I am slowly gaining weight!
Seenie, My weight has always gone up and down, and I appreciate any info that you or Lamb has to offer. LOL

The easiest way to lose weight is a dry corral.
Now whether you do a low fat, low carb, gluten free or low starch (which most of us do, because it also seems to help in general - including blood sugar) you have to burn more calories than you consume, or you will gain weight. Meds have little to with it other than effecting your appetite.
Heres an easy way to monitor it: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/
If you monitor things daily, then there are no nasty surprises (like when I went to put mu Tux on a few months ago) I'm going to avoid this soapbox like he plague. Suffice it to say I lost 150#, gained 60 and lost 30 before I figured it out. This weigh weekly is a bunch of hooey, when we are flaring sitting on our a** and doing a round of predi all while feeling sorry for ourselves we can put 25 pounds on in 3 days (I've done it)
I can't walk much either. I ride my exercise bike because it is easy on my feet and knees, but the seat is rough on the butt. I have hip pain and a hip replacement so the hard seat is uncomfortable. I also have a mini trampoline, which is easy on the joints too. I mostly just slowly bounce and run in place. I use a portable bicycle peddler for my arms. I
t's so much nicer if I can get outdoors and walk though, but the streets around my house are really hilly and walking in the park is around in circles, not much fun. I've heard that riding your bike slowly with some short and fast periods is beneficial. I lack motivation most of all.

I don't find the meds affect my weight but my level of activity really does. If my PsA is under decent control I am able to be more active. I exercise in a heated pool and walk at a mall. When my PsA is under good control I do not have to use a cane and can work for a few hours in the heated pool. My insurance pays for 30 visits of PT every year and I make good use of that. It teaches me new exercises that challenges me a little and helps the pool boredom. I also talk to everyone I see at the pool, that helps the boredom too. The physical therapist is very good at adapting the exercise if I end up sore after something but I keep moving. Then each week it gets easier. I also promise myself treats to keep myself going. This week it was a doughnut which will not help the weight gain but boy was it good! Other times it is a small item at the mall.
