Since my husband is off work tomorrow, I will be able to start taking the prednisone pack. I didn’t want to start it when I would be home alone, because I have so many allergies and sensitive to so many medications. Because of that reason, I’m now nervous and having to bit of anxiety. Ugh. I mean what if I have an allergic reaction?
( I had a reaction to a diuretic blood pressure med! Yes seriously!) What if it doesn’t help me? What if I can’t handle the side effects?? What if what if what if???
(See some serious anxiety!)

Hi Angie, yeah I get the anxiety as I’m really drug sensitive as well. In fact I also had a reaction to a diuretic blood pressure med … Natrilix … turned out there is some connection with it and sulphonamides and it was me, not the docs, that made the link when I also reacted to sulfasalazine. But seriously, as far as pred is concerned, it’s what they would give you to control an allergy/sensitivity so my guess is you’ll be just fine.
I keep having episodes of idiopathic angioedema in my throat and face so I carry an EpiPen in case of anaphalaxis but the first line treatment is an antihistamine with pred as a back-up if it doesn’t settle. Maybe if you are really worried you could speak to your GP/PCP about having an EpiPen in case a reaction was ever severe. It doesn’t “treat” it per se but it gives you time to call paramedics/get to hospital. Having that with me at all times takes away alot of my anxiety about reactions.

The diuretic I had a reaction to is microzide, is a brand name of it. Idk what is in it that I reacted to. I haven’t figured that out yet.
Well I have had a steroid for a reaction. Is it the same as prednisone? I’m sure praying you’re right!
I’ve thought about asking about an epipen but I forget when I’m at the doc office. I’d probably feel a lot better if I had one.

Prednisone is used for Allergies so hopefully you’ll be fine. I have heaps of allergies to tablets and food allergies. i find prednisone will give you energy and help with inflammation. I hope it works for you, best of luck.
Hi Angie…I got prednisone once for a severe allergy, too. I think you can be confident you won’t be allergic to it, but as Jules suggested, ask for an epi pen or at least talk to your doctor or a pharmacist about your concerns…they would know if people can be allergic to prednisone.

I called the doctor office. Of course I had to leave a message. So I wrote down the questions I could think of to ask her, including about an epipen. She’s supposed to call me back within 2 hours.

Doc assistant called me earlier today but I’d taken a small dose of benadryl before I started the prednisone pack and I just couldn’t stay awake. I guess I took more than I thought I had lol
Ok to the point, she said she doubted I’d have a reaction but it is possible to be allergic to pred. She agreed that an epipen would probably take away some of my anxiety. She sent in a prescription for one. I haven’t been to get it yet tho.
I started the prednisone pack and so far so good. It gave me a boost of energy after the second dose. My husband was almost laughing at me! Lol I’m still hurting somewhat and quite tired now but I cooked supper! Yes! Thank you God!
Idk if it’s a side effect or what, but I had a horrible hot flash when I was cooking. I finished cooking and had to sit down for a while until it passed. Then I was fine. Also had a horrible headache after taking the first dose and dizziness but they both have subsided.
Got one more dose for today and all’s looking good. Thank God!

I’m on a 6 day, 21 pill pack. But if it helps me that well, I’ll be talking to my doc. I don’t see my rheumatologist until Aug. But my gyno (pcp for now) could and probably would prescribe some kind of prednisone for long term or at least a couple of weeks. Thank you for responding.

That figures. Lol well it took a few minutes before I could breathe, and it lasted longer than usual but it finally subsided. Thank God! So far no more hot flashes tho. Going to take my last dose for today in a few minutes. Then hopefully I can sleep and better than I have in the past few days.
I do hope you’re not taking the pred (which are steroids) in the evening or just before bedtime? It’s best to take them first thing in the morning as they can certainly ensure you can’t sleep.
Prednisone is a wonderful drug and can make a huge difference at times. But long term use comes with some serious side effects. I would encourage you to complete the dose pack and then try to wait until you see your doctor.
Hi @AngieB I am not 100% sure, but both are used for allergies. I had steroid shots in my hands as I have carpal tunnel made worse from having PsA.
I have prednisone tablets if I need the pain to settle down, it gives energy the higher the dose the more energy you have, it can affect your sleep, keeping you awake for long hours. I find on smaller doses I am fine. I really hope you find relief there is nothing worse then being in pain 247. xx

It’s a 6 days, 21 pill dose pack. The first day, which was yesterday, I had to take 6 total of the pills. Today it’s 5; tomorrow is 4 And so on. And yes, I’m supposed to take a dose before bed. I slept just as well or not well as I had been. No change in my sleep. Still swollen in my feet, ankles and toes. Shoulder and neck still hurt badly too.
@Stoney thank you. I will wait until my next scheduled appointment, which is in a month I believe. I also have the infusion to do, which I’ll start Tomorrow and get it every Thursday for 4 or 6 weeks (I can’t remember which she said.)
@LeisaT oh no! I have hand and fingers problems too. It can be painful and aggravating at times to not have able to do what we need to without pain.
I asked Dr goggle about it and yes, they’re similar almost the same med. Close enough that they’re interchangeable, at least the names are.
I figured that out last night. Just one 4mg pill there wasn’t any SE really but when it called for taking 2 of 4mg pills, is when I had dizziness and hot flashes.
So far no changes in swelling or pain but Dr goggle said it could take up to 5 days of taking the pred pack to see it feel any changes.

I’m glad to hear/read that. But we’re night owls. My husband works night shift. I’m sometimes up until 5am. Lol he doesn’t get home from his shift until about 7am. Lately I’ve been sleeping later than I had before. I used to be up about 12pm but lately I haven’t been getting up until 1 or 2pm. Just no energy and not sleeping well either, I guess. Thankfully I haven’t had any issues with the pill pack.
@Poo_therapy hey there. Well yesterday there were 6 I had to take. They’re 4mg each. Today there is 5. I’m fixing to eat and then take the last dose, which is 2 pills. Tomorrow there’s only 4 doses of one pill each. It drops one pill a day until the last day is 1 pill. Then I’m done.
I’m a night owl so I’ll be up for a while longer. But yes I’m glad it’s a short pill pack too!

Day 3 of prednisone pack. Even though I didn’t sleep well or very long and went to bed with a throbbing headache as well as shoulder and neck pain from he%#, I woke up less stiff and my shoulder and neck were NOT hurting! Thank you Lord! But sadly, that is the only improvement as of yet BUT it is an improvement! Praise God!
