Informal poll: I have PsA AND a kid in the spectrum!

Oh wow. Anyone have any conclusive evidence/study results done on this? I'm curious. I have PsA and will soon be trying for a baby..... :(

By stating that there is a connection or link between autoimmune disorders and autism, I did NOT mean to imply causation. I, too, have had statistics courses and understand that 'correlation does not equal causation'. However, if you google autism and autoimmune disorders, there are a good bit of articles relating to research investigating a link between them. I happen to find this area of research interesting. I don't believe that anyone was claiming that autism is actually caused by autoimmune diseases, simply that there seems to be some sort of association between them. I personally feel that a lot of the increase of certain health issues (like autoimmune diseases, developmental disabilities, etc) are likely-related to the corruption and over-processing of our food supply, but that is my personal opinion based on my own reading.

In the future, I'll be sure to include disclaimers that my views are my opinion only, so as not to upset or confuse those that might consider my wording to be fact!

I don't think anybody said, you said that.

More interesting is that in this case people are quick to discuss and understand that "correlation does not equal causation" but when some quack comes at them with a "diet" or 50 dollar bottle of supplements with even LESS correlation, folks are all over that......

I wonder if its because us parents of theses kids have done two things differently. We have read every scrap we find about it, stay current, and discuss it unemotionally with each other as well as service providers (most of the time) and more importantly have learned that we if we DON'T learn how to live with our kids needs, avoid the triggers, structure and form our lives to best "get along" with our kids and take advantage of their strengths, LIFE will be living hell.

Apply those skills to our disease and............

My 13 year old has Aspergers, and type 1 diabetes, and an LD in written language.

I often wonder if it's stress from dealing with chronic special needs issues that exacerbates or triggers an auto-immune response in some.

Aspergers nor auto-immune disorders run in my side of the family.

My spouse is aspie. My nephew on my spouse's side also has Aspergers.

Just sayin'

I had a cervical disctetomy and fusion and then.....

I had aggressive and invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast and then.....

I have fibromyalgia and then....

I have psoriasis and then.....

I have psoriatic arthritis.

And I played with mercury as a child.

I think the person who started this feed said she was just looking for others who she can talk to that understand both of these issues. But it somehow got taken to a whole new level. If you look around enough on the internet you will find someone somewhere saying something about the things you want them to. But I don't believe half of what's on the internet by so called "experts".

Just my 2 cents. for what it's worth.

Suzanne, this who thread is based on one person saying, "I have PA and I have a child on the spectrum, does anyone else have the same?" And given that autism is so common, some of the hundreds of people on this site came forward with the same story. There's no connection here. Your future child is not at any more risk of developing autism than any other future child.

As to the sources "investigating the link" ... if I could get a dollar every time someone tried to link something to autism... I'd be richer than Bill Gates! Now do we have too many chemicals and bad stuff in our environment and in our food, well... no comment!

Suzanne…try not to worry, our children are a mix of our genetic material and that of our partners, they are eposed to chemicals and environmental influences which may or may not be harmful. We can never know what is in store for ourselves or our children. If you what children, have children, they are the greatest joy and you will love them, cry over them, protect them and fight for them, whatever! And no one has perfect children…althought we all think we have

I completely agree with Louise! Very well said!

They are removing it from the DMSR as a separate condition and it will fall under "The Spectrum".
